Discord screen share audio not working: Fixes
Here are some fixes that you can try to resolve the Discord screen share no audio issue:
1. Check Discord servers
- At times, Discord’s servers may be down, causing performance and functionality issues on the Discord app. However, this doesn’t happen often, as servers are down very rarely during normal working hours.
- Nevertheless, it makes sense to first check if Discord servers are down before you try any other fix. You can check Discord servers’ status by going to Discordstatus.com.
2. Run Discord as administrator
- Discord requires administrative access on your computer, to bypass triggering a firewall flag. This is because Discord remotely shares your entire screen to other computers. Hence, running Discord as an administrator might resolve the no audio problem.
- Here’s how to do it: Press ‘Windows key + S’ on the keyboard, and search for ‘Discord’ in the start menu. Right-click on the Discord app and click on ‘Run as administrator’ to grant Discord administrator access.
- Relaunch your screen share on Discord and check if the Discord screen share no audio issue still persists.
3. Disable full-screen mode on your application
- Several users have also reported a glitch that causes Discord to not play audio on screen share, when the application that is being shared on the screen, is in full-screen mode. The bug interferes with Discord’s permissions and transmission of audio.
- Therefore, try to switch the application from full-screen to windowed mode. To switch to windowed mode, click on the rectangle on the top-right corner of the screen or double-click on the title bar.
- If you’re playing a game and sharing the screen, you’ll have to go to the game’s settings and select windowed mode instead of full-screen. After you’ve exited full-screen mode in the application, close Discord, re-launch the app as well as the screen share, and check if the audio is working properly.
4. Restart your computer
- Often, any issues in performance or glitches in apps can be fixed by a simple reboot. Hence, restart your computer, launch Discord and check if the no audio issue persists when you share your screen.
5. Close all other 3rd-party applications
- If you’re running multiple power-hungry applications in the background, alongside an advanced game as well as the Discord client, it can lead to performance issues.
- Hence, make sure you close all non-essential background processes and applications and re-launch Discord. Here’s how to do it on a Windows PC:
- Press ‘Ctrl + Alt + Delete’ and click on ‘Task Manager’. In Task Manager, close any running 3rd-party applications and background processes. Restart Discord screen share and check if the audio is transmitting properly.
6. Reset Discord Voice settings
- Resetting to the default voice and video settings on Discord can help resolve the screen share audio transmission problems. Especially, if you’ve recently altered the settings.
- To reset the Discord voice settings, follow these steps: Open Discord, and click on User Settings (the gear icon) next to your avatar. In the left menu, scroll down and click on ‘Voice & Video’ > ‘Reset Voice Settings’. Click on ‘OK’.
- Close Discord and relaunch it. Test screen share and check if the audio transmission issue has been resolved.
7. Switch to Discord Legacy audio subsystem
- If you’re running an older machine, chances are that your computer’s hardware is incompatible with the latest Discord audio subsystem. Hence, you can try shifting Discord’s audio subsystem settings to Legacy.
- Here’s how to do it: Open Discord, and go to User Settings. Next, click on ‘Voice & Video’, and select ‘Legacy’ under ‘Audio Subsystem’.
8. Clear Discord cache and roaming data
- Discord’s screen share and audio transmission problems can sometimes be attributed to a caching issue. Note that if you typically run a lot of programs, you might have experienced caching problems previously.
- Hence, you’ll need to clear the Discord cache folder manually. To do this, right-click on ‘Start’ and click on ‘Run’. Make sure you close the Discord app before doing this. Note that you can also use the short-cuts ‘Windows key + R’ or ‘Windows key + S’ > Type in ‘Run’ to open Run.
- Next, type in ‘%appdata%’ in the ‘Open’ field and click on ‘OK’. Windows takes you to a folder called ‘Roaming’. In the ‘Roaming’ folder, delete the subfolder named ‘discord’
- Now restart Discord and check if the screen share no audio problem persists.
9. Update your computer’s audio drivers
- Having outdated or the wrong drivers installed for your audio input or output devices can lead to problems in Discord’s screen share audio. Hence, you’ll need to update them by downloading and installing the latest drivers.
- To do this, first press the ‘Windows + R’ on your keyboard to launch Run. Enter ‘devmgmt.msc’ in the Open field and click ‘OK’.
- In the Device Manager window that opens up, click on the arrow next to the ‘Sound, Video, and Game Controllers’ section to expand it. Right-click on the audio device, and click on ‘Update Driver’.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the latest drivers, and relaunch Discord to verify if the screen share audio problem has been resolved.
10. Enable Push-to-talk on Discord
- While Discord automatically detects while someone is speaking and transmits it over the screen share, you can try switching off automatic audio detection and use ‘push to talk’.
- Push to talk, highly prevalent in walkie-talkies, is when you have to press and hold a button whenever you want to speak. By default, not pressing the button will not transmit audio from your end to the others.
- To enable push to talk, go to User Settings > ‘Voice & Video’ and under ‘Input Mode’, enable Push to talk by checking the box next to it. You can also set a custom key as the push to talk button in the ‘Shortcut’ field.
- Next, when you’re screen sharing, make sure you are pressing and holding the key while you’re speaking. Check if this has resolved the no audio issue.
11. Check if microphone permissions are granted
- First, check if 3rd party apps are allowed access to the microphone on your computer. To do this, press ‘Windows + S’ on your keyboard and search for ‘microphone privacy settings. Open the settings page.
- Ensure that the ‘Allow apps to access your microphone’ setting is enabled. Scroll down and see if Discord has been granted permission.
12. Check Input device on your computer
- You also need to make sure that the right input device has been selected. To do this, right-click on the volume icon in the right end of the taskbar. Click on ‘Open Sound settings’.
- Under ‘Input Device’, make sure the correct input device is selected. For instance, if you’re using an external headphone mic, select that, or choose the built-in microphone in your PC.
13. Update Discord
- Screen sharing on Discord was a relatively recent release, so if you’re facing issues with audio while screen sharing on Discord, chances are you might be running the feature beta in an older version of Discord.
- Updating Discord to its latest version will resolve this issue. To do this, first press the ‘Windows key + R’ launch ‘Run’. Type ‘%localappdata%’, and click on ‘OK’. Go to ‘Discord’ > and double click on ‘Update.exe’ to launch the updater.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the latest update. Launch Discord screen share and check if the problem persists.
14. Uninstall and reinstall Discord
- If you’re still facing audio issues while screen sharing on Discord, you can try uninstalling Discord completely from your PC and installing a fresh version.
- Here’s how to do it: Press the ‘Windows key + R’ to bring up Run, and enter ‘appwiz.cpl’ in the ‘Open’ field to bring up the Windows uninstaller.
- Under ‘Apps and Features’, type in ‘discord’ in the search field, select the ‘Discord’ application, and click on ‘Uninstall’.
- After Discord has been uninstalled, open Run > type in ‘%appdata’ > Click ‘OK’. Select the ‘Discord’ folder, and delete it.
- Next, open Run again > type in ‘%localappdata’ > Click ‘OK’
- and in the Local folder, select the subfolder named ‘Discord’ and delete it.
- Restart Windows, go to the Discord website and download the latest version of Discord.
