Before the pandemic there was remote work, though it wasn’t very popular. In fact, remote work was a common term mainly for people working on freelancing positions in tech and telecommunications jobs. In early 2020, due to the spread of Covid-19, quarantine measures, government shutdown and self-imposed isolation all played their roles in disrupting many of the long-established work traditions.
One year later, the accelerated remote work revolution has evolved from a short term safety precaution to a long-term practice. Multiple research reveals that a majority of remote workers now plan to stay remote permanently. Upwork estimates that around 36.2 million Americans would be working remotely by 2025, which is a direct 87% increase from the pre-pandemic situation. And this transition is not only going to impact the way we work, but also the way we live.
Jobs across a variety of industries enabled remote work with flexible practice. Remote work has allowed businesses to reach out all over the globe for the kind of talent they needed to effectively run a business even during the middle of the pandemic.
All kinds of jobs gave employees the opportunity to adjust to this new environment, after all, millions of employees were struggling to manage their work and other family obligations amid the pandemic concerns. Without giving this flexibility to remote employees, many more organizations would have had to shut down completely.
Covid led employers to offer extraordinary opportunities to the employees to log in to their workplace from home and work virtually with the rest of their co-workers. The sudden transition was an experiment that turned out to be beneficial with findings that show an increase in productivity and extended level of employee satisfaction for working from home. Without the emergency, the rapid shift to remote work would have never occurred. And the result of this new normal is changing the workforce in which flexible remote work has become a standard. But how will remote work change the workforce overall?
How Remote Work is Changing The Workforce
The dramatic shift to a distributed workforce has accelerated the move to adopt remote work infrastructure and helped further to solidify itself into the future of work practices. This includes overall reassessment of workforces, time management system, remote working policy, pay scales and more. Observing the changes, we have outlined how remote work may look like in future.
For Employers
To maintain any managerial role, employers will supervise their respective remote teams while working from home. As both employers and employees work from home, there are many changes that have taken place and will continue further. Let's learn about some of the most prominent changes that will continue in managing the remote workforce:
-
Team Communication: Managing team communication has changed due to staying away from the team during working hours. Now, team communication takes place with remote workers using tools like Zoom, Slack, or Microsoft Teams to synchronize and check-in with each other regarding work projects and other concerns. The use of technology in managing virtual teams is a particular feature of remote work that will continue to define the future of work.
-
Workplace Modification: Without employees working in the office, your office space needs are no longer the same and from office rent to utilities to office supplies there is a subsequent change in the budget. You can run a small office for a physical presence when you have a hybrid workforce.
-
The Use of Artificial Intelligence: The future of work is all about artificial intelligence (AI) and its emerging role in managing businesses. Future forecasters think, in the future every worker needs to learn the basics about artificial intelligence in the workplace. But also skills such as creativity, collaboration and empathy will continue to be valued.
For Employees
For remote employees, communication and workflow changes have impacted how they have worked. These are some of the impacts that will continue to restructure the nature of remote work:
-
Productivity: Productivity is the key factor to sustain any job. Working from home is a challenging situation where one has to juggle childcare and other family obligations. However various studies have shown that productivity has increased and improved when employees are working from home. Businesses are also using monitoring software to measure productivity metrics for remote workers, which has shown satisfactory results for the remote workforce.
-
Flexibility: Remote work has allowed employees to enjoy more flexibility in managing their personal and professional tasks. Remote employees also save money and time which earlier they had to invest in conducting their daily commute to the office. As a result of various benefits, employees can more conveniently handle domestic issues during break making their life more flexible. Remote work has opened up the world to all new possibilities with greater flexibility for workers.
-
Work-life balance: Balancing work and personal life is always a hectic issue for many employees. With a busy life schedule, work stress and long working hours, many employees failed to give enough time to their personal life. Finally, remote work has given them a win-win situation where employees can take care of their personal life and work productively at the same time. Although the working situation is different for every worker, working from home has given them the time to do things that they could not manage earlier. In the future, remote workers will ask for more functional balance for improved work efficiency and better life.
Remote work has brought a lot of changes in the way employees are working currently, and it will continue to bring better change in the future. As employees are now looking forward to working under a flexible term where they look forward to working efficiently and productively from home. While it’s impossible to guarantee how widespread remote work will remain going forward, the benefits and convenience of remote working practices have established its popularity.
Considering all the benefits of remote work it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere. To save the bottom line, business leaders should look at the present impacts of remote work and come up with best practices for securing their workflow.
Business leaders should know how to support their hybrid team with communication standards, advanced tools and all other necessities that will help employees to work productively. We all know that work will never be the same, in the future, remote workers will expect a flexible working environment and businesses should be ready to accept the changes.
